BJ-7 Steady Bracket? What is it & where does it go

I have this part, which I understand is one of 2 and I don't know where it (they) attach. in the moss catalog page 120 # 15 it is called a steady bracket and shows it at the front of the car. I would appreciate anyone describing to me how and where they are attached. (a photo would be helpful.)

Those 'steady' the lower unsupported corner of the splash panel (#10 in Moss catalog). Hard to get a picture but they connect the splash panel to the shroud by the same fasteners that secure the inner grille in place.

During my browsing today I discovered a photo that shows not only how and where the steady brackets are attached but also the splash panels, which I was also trying to figure out!

I thought that image looked familiar. It is my car. As I recall the brackets do have a LH and RH side. Also, it looks to me like your bracket in the first photo is bent a little out of shape. The end that screws to the splash panel is closer to a 90 degree bend, again, if I remember correctly!

Do all Healey's have these splash panels on, I have a BJ7 and as yet have not fitted these as i didn't know they existed.

I'm also puzzled as to how the radiater deflector plates are attached/positioned, can you help.

Hi Chicken,
Your car should have the splash panels. Look on your inner front fender and you should see four threaded holes. See the arrows in the photo for location.

Here's a photo of the layout. The two slots referenced by the blue arrows fit into the lower/outboard grill assembly studs. These studs also hold the splash guard stays. The studs are item #75 HERE

Not sure what you mean by "threaded" holes. If I remember correctly, the four fasteners on each side of the car for the splash panels are sheet metal screws, not machine screws.

Robert and Chicken,
In the photo above you will note that I have fabricated aluminum air deflectors that prevent air from escaping around the sides of the radiator. These replace the stock deflector. Since I have just finished my car it remains to be seen if the deflectors work sufficiently to help keep the running temperature down. If my new approach doesn't work, I will just go back to the original. I will add that installing the deflectors I made was much easier than the Rube Goldberg set up.

Now that you know the location, the next question may be are they painted car color? I believe the steady brackets should be black.

The screws used to be sheet metal screws on my car. Now the holes are too big, and require machine screws and nuts. What a pain!!! Don't know about the color of the steady brackets. I had mine painted body color.

What color are the splash panels also? I see in the picture they are painted body color but I have also seen them painted Black. I am glad you started this tread beause I also have these twisted brackets and had not figured out where they went. I don't remember putting them on my BN4.

From your picture of the radiator deflectors i understand that the 2 lower fittings mount onto the same bolt as the grille through the shroud but where do the 2 top holes bolt to ?
Am i also right in thinking that the splash panel stays also bolt to the bottom grille bolts ?

I believe the splash panel brackets bolt to the bottom grill studs. I also believe that the splash panels are painted body color. That's the way I'm doing it anyway.

I just received this info re. purchasing both steady brackets and splash panels from Kilmartin automotive sheet metal. Not sure if this is for the set or for 2 of them plus the stays for each side. Have requested further info & will post it when I get it.


The AH218 splash panels are handed left and right, costing $43.70 the set, air postage would be $25.45 (<1 kg), total of $69.15.

I looked at that the other day on my car. Unfortunately, I've had the deflectors off for too many years to remember. Hopefully someone here will have the answer, though once the deflectors get attached to the bottom and the sides snugged to the radiator, it should become apparent where the top bolts go.

Now received my splash panels and there just as you show, will have a fit up when i get them painted, however i believe i should have trimmed the cross brace panel back on fitting as it extends about an 1" over each edge of the front wheel arch ?
At the time i didn't see a problem with this as i didn't know the splash panels should overlap here, do you have a photo of how it should look ? would put a picture of mine up here if i knew how to ?

Hi Rob,
I'm sorry, I'm not envisioning what you're saying, long hard day at work. If you are talking about the overlap where the four screws attach the splash panel to the inner fender, the answer is I'm not sure. 1" inch doesn't sound outlandish though. I think the main thing to be aware of is the splash panel (towards the front of the car) should be inboard enough that the tire doesn't rub against it in a hard turn. The stay should take care of that, but I'd check since you've just painted the part.
