Bit OT: dangers of petrol

Last night I poured about 1/4 of a gallon of petrol into my gas tank to test a patch. I forgot about it and left the tank on my work bench. The tank is not sealed in anyway. It is expected to get into the 110s today and there is a gas fired hot water heater with a pilot light in my garage.

Should I run home and take car of that gas... or do you think my house will still be standing when I get home from work this afternoon?

How large of a garage?

Personally, I'd go home and take care of it. Better safe than sorry.

Just so long as you don't go down there at 1 am and strike a match to take a look!!

I hope things are still standing...

Quite a few years ago I lived in an apartment where the next door neighbor decided that a wine bottle would be a good place to store some gas drained from his motorcycle (which he was in the process of repairing...). He placed this bottle of gas in the kitchen sink - there was no top on the bottle and there was a gas water heater in the kitchen... It was a Saturday night, so he decides to go out on the town.

I was sitting in my apartment watching TV when about 9:00 pm there was a tremendous boom, so I stepped outside to see what it was all about. All the windows of his apartment were blown out and various items were on fire within the apartment.

There really was not much of a fire, so we used all of the fire extinguisher we could find to put out the fires - the fire department was called - by the time they showed up the fire was already out. Questions were asked. Information given...

The fireman said what probably happened was the gas vaporized. The vapor then filled up the sink then flowed out of the sink onto the floor when it made contact with the pilot light - Whoosh!

The only saving grace was it was an end apartment and explosion blew the outside wall out about 2 feet - amazingly there was only smoke damage to the surrounding apartments. And very frazzled nerves!

The best part was the guy showed up at about 2:30 am the next morning - saw the fire truck - asked the fireman that was there what happened. The fireman told him some guy blew up his own apartment - the guy didn't let on that it was his apartment... He just turned around and left - never saw him again!

True story!

I went home for lunch and dealt with the fuel properly.

Miraculously, it was not hot in the garage, though outside temps where hovering around 100. There was not even an odor of gasoline.

As my mom always says, God protects the stupid.
