Got to the point that I could no longer stand the bonnett. so put some wood peices and a towel over the battery areal and closed the hood gently and bent that darn thing in the shape of the Cowl.

Now I see that the drivers side hindge is not right. So will remove the bolts and close the hood this afternoon when folks come home from work so I have a bit of help. The dirvers side is high and about a quarter inch forward. Hindge locks cockeyed. We will see, maybe it is no longer the bonnet.

Drove over to a friends house, he was not home, temp got to 180 degrees and toped out there, outside temp is about 90. All good in the cooling system.

Anyway I noted that cold I have all kinds of oil pressure at idle and speed. At 180 degrees I have 10 at idle, 20 at 2K, 30 at 3K, and 40 at 4K.

Wife is off to do some shoping, will stop by Wal Mart for some items including new filter and 5 Qtrs of 30W oil.

We will see on this as well, surely I will have to pull the engine but would rather wait till weather is better here in October.

Weeeeeee, forgot how much fun second gear is at 30 mph on sharp corners. She just wants more.

To perhaps ease your concerns.

Smokey Yunick(who I consider one of the most knowledgeable auto men ever). Stated that it was volume that was more important than pressure. He said if you have 10 lbs. for every 1000 rpm you are OK in the lube department.

You might think about 20/50, it'll help with your pressure. I love the forum.

I may take some lumps for this but I had a 1275 that needed bearing and I didn't feel like doing them. My solution was 3 quarts of 20-50 and 1 quart straight 50 weight. This brought it up from 0-5 psi at hot idle to 15-20 psi. I agree that it is volume not pressure, but if it is too thin all that volume leaks out before it gets to the far end of the oil distribution. The 50 wt helps short term.

Jack,

20W/50W is what the specs call for not straight 30 Weight. Could make a big difference in your oil pressure running the correct stuff in there. I know some folks say straight 30W for first couple of hundred miles during break but you've got that many on the car running around in your neighborhood. Quit looking for the complicated solutions go for the simple ones first.

useing 20-50 at the momemt, going to thicken it up, 20 obviously does not do it.

The orginal shop manual says:

For tropical use, thats down to 32 degrees.

Duckhams 30W
Castrol XL
Esso Extra 20-30
Mobile oil A
Shell 30W
Energol 30W
Filtrate 30
Sternol 30

Now, would be my opinion that 30W is what we should use.

Also says, Normal running 30 to 60 lbs
Normal idling 10 to 25 lbs

Seems like I meet that but will try the 30 W and report changes, maybe I can live with this awile.

Forgot to say that a number like 20-50 means the oil is 20W with a shrar strength of 50, fine for a modern engine but not much use to us. 30W means 30W with a shear strength of 30, much thicker.

Changed the oil.

pressure now about 13 idle and 40 running.

30W HD. Filter Delco PF53

Better Jack but remember the 50W is for warm climates like you have where you live. 20W is for the cold times that you never really get down there.

Still need to change the pump of course but now can do it on my scheduld, like when it is cooler.
