Bigger fuel tank?

I was thrilled when I was able to get my Sprite to break 25 mpg on my last tank. I guess that's pretty typical. Most of my driving is zipping around back roads with a generous use of the right foot.

25 was normal for me in the Tunebug with the built-up 1275 and 4-speed. Penny will get a slightly milder engine and a 5-speed so she should do a little better, but probably not much better.

I'll admit, part of the reason I bought the MGBGT was to have a better touring car with longer range. My previous MGB got about 25 normally (with a 12 or so gallon tank) and closer to 30 on cruise with the overdrive. 250 miles was easy, hopefully the GT should be similar.

i had to do some mods on the filler neck to get the aftermarket fuel tank to fit correctly as I could hardly get the gas cap on. Found the filler neck sticking into the tank 1.5 inches. Cut a slot in the neck about .5 inch down inside the neck. And cutting the neck made it all possible. Used a neck hose from Moss. YMMV

Yay! An on topic post! What tank did you use and what is the capacity?

I think it was Moss tank from around 15-20 years ago. Must have been manufactured on a Friday afternoon. It will now hold just a little over 7 gals and does not need burping.

One could attach jerry-cans to a trunk rack. :wink-new:

The RAF had the same problem with the Spitfire (airplane, not the car) -- it needed to carry more gas when the RAF went on the offensive, so they made provisions for external drop tanks. Seeing that the Spridget is the motor vehicle equivalent of a Spitfire (even if Triumph named the car after the plane), small, nimble and maneuverable...and most pilots describe getting into a Spitfire as "putting the airplane on" as would most Spridget drivers, perhaps we could make such a provision for external droppable tanks as well. Geez...this is starting to sound like a Top Gear challenge. Anyone have Jeremy Clarkson's home phone so I can call him?

Hmmm, My heavy 72 gets 31 mpg, I don't understand why you guys are getting such low mileage in a smaller car and smaller engine. PJ
