Big Healey Generators: Repair parts & Substitution

I recently had my 59 BN6 generator professionally rebuilt. This is generator
model 22483A-D.
I was wondering if I could use this generator in my 63 BJ7 which is a model
22530A-B????

Also, does anyone know where I can get the proper parts (bearing, bush,
springs, brush set, etc. to rebuild the BJ7 generator. Looks like Moss carries
some but not all the repair parts.

Thanks
Charlie

Hello Charlie, I have in the past run different generators from different years on my MGs. I don't have first hand experience with different Healey generators but the one on my BJ7 seems typical to me of the LBC generators. You might have noticed or read that many people are installing modern Alternators on their Healeys. with the right brackets either homemade or bought they work just fine. With the Alternator you would make a change to the wiring at the voltage regulator because the Alternator has internal voltage regulation. if the generator can be bolted up solidly and keep the pulleys in alignment and the wire connections use the same connections then i think it will work just fine. I think alot of the difference in the generators between different years was that they kept increasing the Ampere rating to increase their capacity. Obviously, they could never increase it enough. that's one reason that the industry went to alternators.

Hi CC, As a general response to your question regarding the generators I would say no you can not use the earlier generator on the later car. This is because, the later cars have larger electrical loads which require a higher capacity generator to maintain battery charging. consequently you certainly would not be improving things by jury rigging a lower capacity generator in to the later car. Repair parts for the generators, bearings, brushes, and bushes, are readily available from the usual part suppliers. If the comuntator needs attention this can be handled by most machine shops---Fwiw---Keoke

AS a temporary substitute the early generator should work just fine and is dependant on how much ampere load you want to apply. The early BN6 generators were rated for 22 amps, somewhere around the BT and BN-7s the rating was increased to 25 amps. The generator on my BJ7 is rated for 30amps max. On a car that has no aftermarket accessories or add-ons, i doubt that you would fine much difference in total electrical load between a BN-6 and a BJ-7. Unless there would be a small difference in wattage of the light bulbs. As a temporary substitute while you are repairing the correct generator?
