Americas Cup starts Sept 7 in San Francisco. About 13:45 they begin to fly.

I'm afraid I have neither the budget nor muscle to earn a ride on one of these.

Nor the location :D

That was cool. I've never seen those before. Thanks! Man, if Hobie made something small and affordable like that they'd sell a million of 'em and I'd be the first in line. I think that would be the only thing to get me back into sailing.

Very impressive in a lot of ways. The skill of the crew, the engineering of the boat. Tacking while airborne would put tremendous stress on what I'm assuming are hydrofoils in the water.

Very disappointed since they went to that format

But those boats are cool

This just might be perfect for his location... no water needed :cool-new:

Hey, I gotta lake 20 minutes away. Less water, less air, smaller boat.

I agree. Nothing like the grace and beauty of a traditional sail boat. Go back to the 12 meter class I say.

Anybody remember Lone Stars? I use to race them as a kid on the Long Island Sound... fun times.

That has me completely baffled
My parents never let me drink

Even the Doc would not touch that stuff!

I prefer 12 meter racing for the cup and white shorts for tennis. Two completely different kinds of sailing, multi and mono hull. I raced Hobie 16's for a number of years until I got tired of having a wet butt. It's hard to match the excitement of a 16 when it's blowing. Getting the Lightning to plane with the spinnaker up ain't bad.

Maybe jump another class back in the cup to J Class. Gotta have a lot of friends to go for a ride though.

I remember Star Class boats from the same area. Larger than a lightning with a keel instead of a center board.

I like 420's cause that what I learned on when on the team but nothing like a Hobie for a small boat. Funny how you always have a soft spot for your first. If I got another one it would be a Hobie but it doesn't make sense to own a boat when I can go rent one on the coast. The local yacht club doesn't have a bad deal but it's twice as far.

I think my sailing days are over....but I'm still looking for a friend with a boat.

New Zealand in race 1 sticks a bow:
New Zealand won the race and lost race two yesterday to Italy after their boat broke.

A more extreme result of the pitch pole earlier, Oracle is pretty good at it:

Well ya got that right!

As for sailing, we grew up with an O'Day "Sprite" as trainer and then a Ray Greene "Rebel."
