General TR Best way to clean unpainted parts

ok - I've got the manifolds off to do the cylinder head and will soon bout this all back together. While I have part of the car apart and it is easy to get at some other areas now, what is a good way to clean the unpainted parts 0- like carbs? If I use Brake Cleaner - will it affect the gaskets? Same with the timing cover, thermostat covers, etc. What about straight acetone?
 
I like straight acetone just because it works pretty well yet evaporates really fast and seems to not leave a residue of its own.

For alloy bits like the carbs and tstat housing it will depend on the final look you want as some like (and the material can take) a high polish. I prefer more of a simple pewter look (easier to maintain too) so carb cleaner is where I start.

Bamboo skewers are useful non-scratching probes for crevice work.
