The GAS seems to settle in when I go back through old images and gear, then think: "It would be nice to have the latest/greatest lens, light, gizmo, etc. to make that task better or easier." To that end, I've picked up some "modern" things, the digital bodies, lenses that focus themselves, other whizz-bang gear.

But something that began to hit me when Greg commented on the 85mm prime I'd found. It would likely have been more adventageous in my situation, to have gone with one of the "older" D-Series optics, one with the option to manually adjust the ∱-stop at the lens if desired (think; off the camera body), instead of an all electronic AF-S one. The later versions have the diaphragm (and auto-focus) controlled electronically rather than "mechanically". Recently I got out my old 55mm Micro-Nikkor to do some copy stand stuff and thought about finding an AF-S 60mm replacement. GAS then setting in.

But instead, thinking about that 85mm AF-S (which is kinda magic, frankly) and looking at what I'd be using the 60mm for, I hunted for and found a D-Series version. From ∱2.8 to ∱22 at normal focal ranges, waaay tighter as it gets to 1:1 macro distances. Barrel extension "robs" light intensity, so the equivalent mechanical ∱-stop at 1:22 ends up being around ∱40.0 at the sensor, for an exposure at ISO 64!! But I get to control diaphragm off-camera. Fair trade IMO. And another piece of useful kit! <*snort*!>
