Bending exhaust pipe

Okay, now that the Tunebug is running I need to finalize the exhaust setup. I had a a new pipe bent up, using the original 948 pipe as a template. The guy did a good job -- especially since he didn't have the car there to use for final adjustments.

The last bit of bend right before the muffler does not quite line up right. Any thoughts as to the best way to bend this pipe, keeping in mind that I don't have a real pipe bender.

Heat? BF Hammer?

Bring it to ol' boy. The sell machines that do this for a reason.

( this comming from the king of beat-to-fit, paint-to-match.)

Agreed. Bending exhaust pipe is not easy to do with improvised tools.

Perhaps it would help if you trace a template of the final shape you need when you take the pipe back.

Here is how you do it. you plug one end, fill with fine sand tamp it in tight. Plug remaining end. Now heat to cherry red where you want to bend it and slowly do so.

Or..........take it back to shop to put on pipe bender.

I've never heard that before Jack, I might be tempted to try it, but probably not with a new pipe I just paid $$$ for.

I'd bring him the pipe and the car.

That's the best option if a trailer is available since the car is not currently road legal.

Neither is mine at first glance ( no inspection, but doesn't apply to me.) but LE still give me a wave and I've never had any trouble out of 'em. If he gets pulled, it'll be for noise and a quick explantion of "going to the muffler shop right now" should do the trick. I'd have a current tag and insurance on first though. "Can't get an inspection w/o and exhast system officer, and they certainly can't install it if it's at my house."

Things are a bit laxed here though.

Good to know that I need the professionals here.

I can get a 15 day temp tag, so that'll be the plan once I've got the brakes to my liking. Then I can take get the car to a shop and get the exhaust done properly.

Bah, put the parts in the pass seat and drive to the shop. If that causes you a prob. stop by the police station first and discuss with them on how to do a one time drive.

Gota think out of the box and remember folks really like to help.

Getting a temp tag is no big deal, costs less than $10 and keeps everything legit. Supposed to snow later this week, though, so I'll wait until I've got a good window with the weather.

Drew you have more patence than I. Shoot, I would have been there and back by now.

That's the problem with having both a full time day job (programmer) and an essentially full time night job (musician) -- only so much time to get everything else done. I've waited 3 years, I can wait another week.
