74 TR6 Spark issues -- engine won't start. I can take the the coil wire out of the distributor cap, hold it against the top of the distributor and watch the spark leap into the cap and the engine starts; however, with it now running i move the coil wire into the top of the distributor and the engine shuts off. Car does have a crane electronic ignition. Any ideas out there

thanks for everyone's time

Jake

Jake - welcome to BCF. I'll let the electronic ignition experts answer your questions, but ... when did the Crane get installed, and when did this problem start happening?

That's very strange, but I think you know that already.

My best guess is a flaw in the coil-to-distributor wire, a crack in the cap or coil, or maybe you are inadvertently moving a connection that is loose. Look into the connection points in the cap and coil; see if something looks wrong. Try a new high-voltage wire. Check the low-voltage connections at the coil.

I've never heard of the Crane ignition being upset my electromagnetic interference, which is a big problem with the Pertronix. But any arcing inside the cap could conceivably upset the sensor's operation. That might happen from a cracked rotor or a crack in the cap.

Might want to look for an obstruction inside the cap where the center post is. Works with wire out but not in. Are plugs gapped wider for the electronics. Seems like it wants more distance/resistance to fire the coil.
