Becoming distresses

Unless I'm more confused than usual, that opening is just into the bellhousing area. Probably should have a cover, but won't hurt anything to leave it open for the moment. Or use a really simple cover, like a chunk of wood and a strap with screws into the two mounting posts.
 
But to seal it permanent I will need to get to it, so it's better to do it with the block out .I would think.
I really don't want to pull the motor twice.
