Wow... what a beast. Reminds me of some of those 24 cylinder, or was it 24 liter, Napiers (throwing flames out the exhaust).
 
I like that! Especially the starting (though I can't quite figure out how it fired *after* he stopped cranking)

Reminds me of that soon to be released film about the original Targa Florio. Really want to see that.

I suppose if the cylinders had fuel, and the ignition was on, then just the right bit of compression at just the right point in the rotation might turn it over and fire it up. I think that can happen on our TR2s and 3s also. (and on prop start aircraft)

Actually, that is what's happening...by design. They used "trembler" coils back then that give out a series of short duration sparks. The trick is to then prime the cylinders, bring the engine to just past TDC with the crank, back away form the car and turn on the ignition.
 
OH MY GOD!!! That was awesome!! I love those old beastie race cars. They are just amazing. If I could have a restoration shop, I'd specialize in stuff like that!
 
One of my Fiat 124s did something like that. Sometimes when I would just turn the key on it would spring to life even before I could turn it to "Start." Darn thing just wanted to go, I guess. Really enjoyed those cars regardless of their quirks. Finally had to give them up when Fiat pulled out and the only parts we could get were from China.
 
I've seen a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost started "on the switch". The ignition is switched on, and judicious application of the manual advance / retard lever causes a plug to fire and, assuming the mixture hasn't all leaked away, the engine starts. No cranking!
 
Did you notice the diameter of the 'Beasts' piston on one of the seats in the background of one of the shots - wow!
 
a 28 liter 4-cylinder! that calculated to 7 liters per jug!!!!!!! That means each piston in that engine has 427 Cubic inches of displacement! HOLY DONUTS!!!!!. Practically paint cans with a 1 foot throw!
