Strange, whenever I log off The Forum, even though I have checked the box to leave me logged on, I have to re-enter my password to bring The Forum back online actively. Is that new or what?

Bill - unless I'm mistaken, if you *log off* (log out) you'll always need to log on again when you come back.

If you don't log off, you'll stay logged on.

I think some folks are mislead by the common use nowadays of "log on to our website!" in TV ads. Those ads just mean "visit our website" - so many people think that just visiting a website means "logging on", and leaving the website (going to another website, or closing the browser) means "logging off".

The "accepted" meaning of logging on means to enter your username and password. And to log off means to click a "log out" or "log off" button.

Unless I'm missing something ...

When TV ads ask you to log on, that is exactly what they mean. Logging on infers registering with your name, email, phone number, address and maybe other personal information. It’s called data farming and advertisers use it to target their market better. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

Hi Bill,
I almost never click the “log out” button when I leave BCF. When I return, my computer reads the cookie that this forum has left on my computer and logs me back in automatically.

I always "log on" and "log off"! It is a simple matter to have your computer remember your log-in name and password so all you have to do is click on it to enter!!!

Bill - so are you actually "logging off" the forum by clicking the "Log out" in the upper right corner? If so, I think that cancels out your "stayed logged on" choice.

Greg - I agree that's what the ads may be asking, but I'd bet hardly anyone actually does it. For all our area TV station websites, there's actually no "log on" possible. And in an hour of watching this morning's TV, every ad that said "log on to our website" actually took you to a website where no real "log on" is possible. I'm still betting the common understanding of "log on" just means to visit a website.

Minor detail that cookies are nearly always placed on your computer to record which websites you've visited - without having to "log on". Yeesh.

Ditto. Takes too much precious time away from the cars. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
