Is there a source to determine the size etc of most of the necessary nuts and bolts to restore a pile of parts back into something useful? I can find many sources that illustrate part #'s etc. but if I want to go buy a grade 8 nut and bolt to fit this or that, and don't have the original, nor am intuitive enough to guess, can I find out somewhere?

1/4 x 28
5/16 x 24
3/8 x 24
A box of each of these with nuts and washers will give you just about all you need. 3/4" in length is about average if you are buying boxes of 100.

Have a look at boltdepot.com. They'll supply a handy box of grade 8 nuts, bolts and washers.
Very useful
