I am looking at converting to an electonic ignition.

Moss sells a Pertronix but it says on their website that you need to order using the original distributor's part number.

Since the distributor I have didn't come from my BE, I'm not sure if it's correct.

What would be the correct part number for the original distributor on a BE with a stock 948 engine?

Hey Ed,

I am currently going through this. A little over a year ago I called Jeff up at Advanced Distributors. (GREAT GUY!!!!!) I was having an intermittent problem with ignition and have now sent the distributor back to Jeff to change it back to a high end old fashioned points set-up. I am sure the Petronix unit is fine, however, I had problems with mine. Points are proven and I am sure that many will tell you the same. I spoke with Hap today and he would never run Petronix in his cars. He runs points as well. Just food for thought...
 
You just need the distributor model number for a petronix.
Original bugeyes used a Lucas DM2, it is stamped on the housing.
Later dizzys which fit and work just fine are Lucas 23D (no vacuum advance)
Or 25D, again it is stamped on the dizzy up near the vac advance.
Just remember, if you go to petronix, carry your old points for when it quits.
 
And of course you could always get the Allison/Crane optical ignition, which, in my opinion, is the best bang for the buck in a bolt on(well, you actually screw it in) installation.
 
ok, I went and purchased a Pertronix entire distributor from LBCarCo.

I will be sending my original to Jeff to be rebuilt as a back-up.

Do I need new plug wires for the Pertronix entire distributor? The wires I have now are for a side-entry cap, the Pertronix seems to be a top-entry from the pics.

Any suggestions on what to get?

I believe that either cap will work. If the cap you are getting is "top-entry" it is easy to get those wires. Have Jeff build you a back-up dizzy with points.
