Are you guys/gals tired of hearing about this lump yet? I got the cam out of the carrier. The front two journals are scored and the surfaces are galled up, but not too bad to be repaired. I'm sure some spray weld or some such thing wiil fix the problem, so it's off to the shop for repairs. This is good news. Looks like I only have a couple of bent valves. There are no marks whatsoever on the pistons, so no problems there...

As soon as the weather gets a bit better I can push the car out of the garage far enough to use the hoist and take out the block, then strip it to look for bearing damage as well. It's kind of nice taking apart a new motor, it's clean as a whistle and all the gaskets just peel off. I would guess my repair will be less than $1000.00, which is not bad at all for a guy who lunched a BDA of all engines!

Yes a double cam four valve would be the end of me for sure.. I heard they broke cams on a regular basis. That's what you get stretching the rpm limit on a motor designed for 9 grand all the way up to 11.5 trying to stay ahead of Ferrarie's...

I guess the real question is, why did it fail? Sounds like lack of oil pressure...I know you can't answer this until it comes apart, but I'd be curious to hear what you find.

I'm glad it isn't lunched. The DFV certainly had a very long life in race car years, especially when you consider the turbo versions used in Indy cars. There must have been something good about it. As to the expense of maintaining one , I guess it is all relative. I have read that in vintage F1, Cosworth powered cars are sought after for their ease of maintainance. Most of the alternative engines were never sold over the counter, after all.

What version BD do uou have, Type R? Is it one of the iron crank versions from an Escort, or a steel crank racing version?

I have heard one story about a DFV in a road car back in my old neighborhood. Never saw it in person so I can’t verify the story first hand but the source was reliable. Seems an F1 team guy ended up with one that wasn’t destined to be put back in a race car and decided to build a sleeper by stuffing it into a Karmann Ghia. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Super 7 it's a stock spec Escort iron block cast crank 1600.

As such it's not worth an astronomical amount, but by the same token it should prove easy to run on pump gas and live a long time if cared for. It's only rated at 120 hp, but standard street spec BDA's are almost impossible to find ( I've never seen or heard of another standard spec unmodified BDA anywhere..).

I did rear an article about a DFV in a Renault ( I think ) van, put together by the people sponsoring one of the teams back in the 80's. It read as a pretty wild ride, I wish I still had the article. The motor was mounted right in the middle of the van, so there was only seating for two. The suspension was pretty special also, and the track times for this beast were as I remember, very impressive.

My granfather built the first hydroplane to run on the St Lawrence river back in the 30's. At the end of his career of racing stuff he had a number of Spitfire motors on his farm, new in thier crates ( Rolls Royce or Merlins, I don't know anything about them.) My dad say's he basically gave them away a few years after WWII, as they were worth nothing really.. Too bad he didn't leave a couple for me.. I could probably pay off my house with one.

now that would be something else in the Cortina!

Hey what do you know, the nose of my cam is twisted as well, so I need a cam too!
