This is not an MG specific question but one that applies to to the Lucas alternator charging systems in general.
I have an acquaintance on another message board who had the hot lead from his battery chafe and short to the chassis. He wasn't aware of the problem until he saw smoke. He managed to disconnect the battery before the cable insulation melted and he repaired the damage to the cable. However, when he put his car back on the road... he swears he's now hearing a whining noise from the battery. He rushed out and bought a new battery only to find the new battery also is making sounds.
I had encouraged him to have the alternator tested before buying a new battery but he opted for the new battery instead. So... could diode failures in the alternator lead to a scenario that could cause the battery to emit noise BUT still operate the charge warning light in a normal fashion?
