Battery for a US 79 Midget Midget - what fits?

All the battery suppliers say to use a group 24 or 26 battery in a 79 Midget. However, a 24 or 26 is 6 3/4 inches deep, and the space from the back of the heater box to the bulkhead is 6 1/2 inches! What is everyone else using? I see that a SP-22NF will fit, has anyone tried one?
I guess I could reposition the heater core forward, but its where they intended it to be right now!
Cheers

Neil, A group 51-R battery fits just fine, I had trouble finding the right size for mine too, despite what Autozone's books say. You'll need the -R version, because a standard group 51 has the terminals the wrong way. NTB should be able to find one for you.

Perfect, exactly what I needed to know, thanks guys - off to Sears for '51'

There's a battery for a John Deere X series garden tractor that looks very close also. I think it was for the diesel in the early X's right after it stopped being a 400 series. I could get JD part #s if anyone wants.

I have seen one of the higher quality 3 year garden tractor batteries used before. They run about 30 bucks in advance auto parts, but I don't really know how long they last like that. I would think with an alternator it would work, with a gen you need more battery. I will be so happy when I get to the battery buying stage.
