TR2/3/3A Battery Box drain

Hi Folks... Has anyone out there dimpled the battery box for a drain? How would one create that counter sink? Does it need one? I built a new box with a flat bottom. I just ordered a tray for the battery itself. What I was thinking was to use a piece of copper flared to fit the dimple secured somehow...haven't got that far yet.. so it would be flush or slightly under. I don't know if the original box had a drain or not..it was so rusted out. Anyhow, suggestions? Thanks, George

The original battery box was dished and had a nipple at the bottom. A rubber drain hose was attached to the nipple and could be run out through a hole in the transmission tunnel.

It could go out the firewall through an unused hole or you could put a tee in the drain hose from the battery box and join the scupper vent to it. Nobody is going to crawl under your dashboard to see if you did it right.

This is the bottom of the battery box. I used a hose barb fitting and drilled the ID to the correct size so that it matched the original drain.

This is the inside view of the battery box with the dimpled drain hole. As you can see there is not much of a dimple. I believe I used a socket that was the correct od of the dimple and used something round to form the dimple. The dimensions for the location of the drain are in the Bentley Triumph manual.

Thanks for the ideas guys..and the photos. It got my brain moving. (not an easy task sometimes) You came through again

The scuttle vent drain goes through a hole in the filler plate for the unused steering column hole in the fire wall.

The factory routing was through a hole in the tranny tunnel cover, so it drained around the bell housing. It was a modification for the early cars, but was standard on all the TR3/3A's. Once the scuttle vent was added it was T'd like Joe said with the vent drain.

You can do the counter sink with cone shaped bolt and nut with a spacer. Just tighten down until you get what you want.

I have seen cars both with the T and without. My car had the hose going out the other column blanking plate.

Thanks again guys.. Steve...Perfect!! The box in my '60 model is installed and painted. Your solution will work without damaging the floor of the box. You guys are the boss. George
