Tube (Salisbury) has better axle seals...Banjo is lighter & gears can be changed easier)...my preference is a Banjo rear end modified to fit tube axles on 'power' cars...Salisbury was the new thing when the GT's came out..& it might have something to do with the additional weight of the car and those Banjo axles.
The reason the factory never put Banjo axles in GTs is because the Tube (Salisbury) axle was supposedly quieter and seeing as how the GT is a hardtop, it caused the Banjo to be too loud in under the car.
My GT is a very early '67. Any chance that it was from factory that way? Does not looked buggered with under the car as is someone put this in after but I'm sure a lot has happen to her over the past 39 years.
If your GT has a banjo rear end, it was put in after it left the factory - probably by a PO who was solving a problem with the Salisbury....for a while the crush washers at the front of the rear end where the driveshaft hooks up weren't available so people just switched rear ends if the thrust washer went bad.
