Banjo rear, new hub help.

Trying today with a friend to change the Left rear hub on my 67B. He had to cut the hub apart to drive the half shaft out as a 22 ton press would not budge it(that was the start of a bad afternoon). We may have trashed the threaded end of the hub in the getting it back on the half shaft part of the job and now we are dealing with badly boogered up threads. How should we have done the new hub on old shaft part of the day? We heated the hub in the oven and froze the shaft in the freezer and got it most of the way on using a brass BFH and finishing with the press.
Day two tomorrow and we need help/ideas on how to better do it the next time. Wife and I need the car for Stowe on Thursday
