Just got a phone call from my Internet service provider telling me my email account had been compromised and was being used to send out spam (suspected as much last night when I got a lot of bounce back emails from emails I hadn't sent). They changed my password to prevent further use but suggested I updated my other passwords 'just in case' - I have several email addresses attached to the same account. My ISP think my account details had been compromised several years ago when MySpace was hacked but only now has it been used.
 
Yikes - scary. But glad your ISP notified you personally.

How the heck did MySpace ever get your personal info?

From time to time I will get an email from someone I know that has something like "Hey check this out" with a link to click on. I always assume it's from a spammer who has hijacked that person's email account.

Sort of. The account was probably hacked for contact info. Most all of those "Hey check this out" e-mails, when you check headers, and Domain Dossier, they are .ru, .ro, .cn, but usually Indonesia.

I have seen accounts hacked into, but usually adding yourself to the address book gives you an early heads up.
 
Heard on the news this morning that a prime suspect is in N.K. CIA seems to be heavily involved tracking the source down. I'm sure every affected country looking for the culprit/s. PJ
 
Just got a notice from my security software company this morning giving me their newest Ransomware protection and instructions how to stay safe, took almost 45 min. to download and install the upgrade. Screen all your emails thoroughly and delete all that are from unfamiliar senders. Make sure your windows program has the latest MS upgrades. Set computer to automatically upgrade. PJ

I have not had my XP laptop online since MS announced they would no longer support XP. Now all my devices and computers are Apple systems, and so far, that has worked for me.
 
Three XP machines on and connected right now. All PC's, two 64-bit, one 32-bit. I am negotiating for an XP laptop with good RAM (unlike the Dell Inspiron 5000e in the closet that has 256MB of RAM, expandable (done) to 512, and it is so slow...

With an external image, I am not too concerned. Better than "system restore".

My auto updates on this box were turned off 9-1/2 years ago, so the lack of MS "support" means nothing to me.

Oh..and ESET AV (paid) killed off WannaCry anyway, according to them.

Not true, less than 5% were XP, but a lot of the big bits of the NHS were hit, I'm currently under the largest NHS trust in the country ( St Barts ( London )) and whilst they would like you to think they've got it sorted, they haven't.
I've attended my local hospital for the past two days and the place is littered with PC's with hand written sign's saying " Do Not Log On! ".

It's all convenient fear-mongering. Oh! It's XP! Oh, must upgrade to Ten and the Brave New World!
Everybody with any cranial capacity knows it is not. It is more an issue of budgetary ideology limiting proper AV and AML.
I may have the last known good OS from MS, but I do not do it "bare". Lots of protection here, including MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit on both the FireFox and IE.
I learned by experience how to protect my equipment oh, 12 -15 years ago, and have had zero issues since then.
I have had a webmail account hacked, but again, when your backup e-mail is the only one of three addresses in the on-line address book, you know right_freaking_now when something is going out that you aren't doing.
