Back to the underbody...

I'm back to the job that I started last summer cleaning the underbody of my 69 b. I thought I got about 1/2 the grime off the car then but now I realize that I didn't. It is amazing the amount of crud there...and what is under it. No major rust but needing attention nonetheless. I plan to coat it with a rubberized underbody paint (rattle-can).

I have a couple of questions though...

First, I wanted to put the wire harness running along the underside of the car in a plastic conduit that I got at autozone (I power washed the cloth covering till it disintigrated). I've taken off two of the supports that hold the wire harness along with the +cable from the battery, the gas line and the brake line. Anyway, there is a bigger support attaching the aforementioned lines to a big crossmember. I took the bracket off and there is a rubber sandwich (definately wouldn't want to bite into that lol) there that I couldn't get off without forcing it - but I stopped short of putting alot of force into prying it off. Should I pry the crap out of that or not?

Also, has anyone topped off the oil in the hydraulic shock absorbers? What type of oil is used for this purpose? The right front appears to be leaking and my Haynes manual says that it is not a serviceable part (can't be taken apart/seals replaced/etc. is my understanding of it). Anyone have any comments on this? Thanks. Jim.

I would POR 15 the underside before I put anything else on it

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif POR15 is great stuff...but prepare it properly and order it in small cans as it goes a long way and cannot be used later.

Stop at the drug store or grocery store and buy a bottle of mineral oil for your shocks. If they are leakng, you may wish to have them rebuilt or swapped with a rebuilt pair. I recommend WORLDWIDE AUTOPARTS for this...they are great to deal with and guaranty the rebuilt shocks for as long as you own the car! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
