The generator on my TR3 went dead this weekend, so I thought it was a good time to do the Delco conversion. I had already converted to thin belts about 2 years ago so everything went pretty smooth. I started about 8:00 trying to find out if it was the generator or the regulator and by 2:00 I was finished. It took two trips to the hardware store to find the right combination of bolts so it could have been faster.
Like the instructions posted here say I cut off about ½ inch from the mounting lug, and bolted it in. Changed from positive to negative ground and everything worked fine.
I gutted an old regulator I had and made the connections to retain a stock appearance. I connected the alternator output using two wires. I kept the original in place and added a 10 ga. wire directly to the starter solenoid so I would not fry my amp meter. Very little of the current goes through the old wire because the gauge registers a small amount of usage when the lights and electric fan are on, about 5 amps when fully loaded, so I switched the amp meter wires back to their original positions so it reads positive, dash light works like it should.
I have good lights at idle now and the alternator appears to have a little less drag than the generator, my idle went up about 50-100 rpm and the engine is not heating up as fast at red lights.
No blue smoke yet, but I’m keeping the fire extinguisher handy.
