B-series Engine ID

I tend to agree, but the "non" rivets for the "MG" logo and the front hold-down with the threaded stud top hint at later units. Kinda points to a hodge-podge of components.

Here are a few things:

If fan is MGB, it is off a '62-'63.

Water elbow outlet is off a G, GA, GB engine.

Water pump connector pipe is off a '62-'71.

Valve cover has been modified & is off a '67 or later based on the oil filler cap, the 'MG' decal (glued on, not riveted on) & where the pipe has been fitted (some covers had a small round place on front & rear where pipe could be added depending on engine application).

PVC valve is '64-'67.

Intake/carbs appear to be '62-'64.

Radiator, if it matters, is '62-'67.

Again, if no ID plate, then the 'engine clock' is important to identify the block..only way to really tell is to open it up & see if the guts have been changed out (rods, etc.).

Lift point on front but not on back suggests that either one could be non-original, but probably not both.

3-blade fans were used until 1967.

Oil filler cap could be correct for any year MGB, but most likely not 62-63. Doesn't matter anyway since the valve cover is probably from another car.

EDIT: Just realized what I'm looking at on the valve cover. It's a late 60's MGB emissions lid. No holes, vent to the offside rear for the carbon canister.

It's definitely a hodge-podge.

According to Chris Betson of Octarine Service in England "The easiest way to tell a 3 from a 5 main bearing engine is to count the sump bolts -
the 3 main has 19 bolts, the 5 main has 18 bolts." Somebody want to crawl under the car and start counting?
Cheers,
