Axle Seals.

1976Midget

While working on Brakes on my Midget i removed one the Axle because it had a Leak. When i pulled the Axle right behind the Plate (infront of the bearing) there was a Seal. Much like the one Behind the Bearing. None of My Books (bently or hanes) Shows this Seal even supose to be there. and the other side doesn't have it either. this is a 76 Midget is there supose to be 2 seals Pre Bearing or Just one preside? Thanks

Well, I don't know anything about midgets, but I do know a little bit about rear housings and it doesn't sound right to me. You say there's a seal behind the bearing, between the bearing and rear housing? That would stop oil from reaching the bearing and that you don't want to do. To me, the seal should be on the outside of the bearing. We are talking about the rear axles, right? How about some photos?

First, welcome!

It sounds like the pressed in seal (#36) is on the wrong side of the bearing in your case. The rubber O-ring (#37) is supposed to seal against the paper gasket (#35). Weird, but it usually works. Some other folks have recommended using some Hylomar or Permatex on the paper gasket to help seal things up.

Having replaced all those seals on my car, it's a messy job. I managed to improvise a bearing/seal press using a vise and some impact sockets, and I'll vouch for using the Permatex on the paper gasket, it helps considerably. I found out the hard way that if it doesn't leak, removing the axle will probably start one.

Come to think of it, I wonder how the bearing is doing? Seems to me if the seal is on the wrong side, it may have gotten brake dust (among other things) into it. You might want to consider cleaning and repacking the bearing, then putting the seal on the inboard side of the bearing.

the guy who i bought the Mg from. was sorta of a Ding bat and had Littery Butcherd the car. so i assume the seal on the wrong side was his way of trying to fix a leak. the bearing has the correct seal on the other side, Wierd! i'm going to replace the gasket and check all the bearing. Brake dust is not an option i dont think the brake in the back have been working for years. the last time the car was Driven was the early 90's. Oddly enough the motor runs great.
