You guessed it. Just a quick post as to what to do & what to order.
If I'm gonna get to know the car I might as well do it all now.
If I can order the parts tomorrow, maybe I can get them for the weekend. Then again I have to figure out the solenoid problem.

Ahhhh... Getting "might as well" fever, I see. Not a bad thing at all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seal, O ring, and gasket x2, set for each side.

And for crying out loud test the solenoid and let us know what the prob is was.

(I'm getting to that SOL. I'll bench test it tonight)

How is the labor part of chaning the seals?

Not a hateful task. Parts are "common" as well. NAPA or a good bearing house can supply the seals/bearings. The paper gasket is the only thing you'd have to buy or make. Labor on it may amount to an hour a side after you've done it once to learn the thing. First one may take a day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Clean clean clean a lot before installing those three items and a bit of sealer on the gasket would be in order.

Is something like an oaktag (sp) acceptable paper or something more or less thick.

You think the guys at NAPA would know about MG's? I asked them for a brake hone and they kinda tilted their heads sideways like a dog hearing a high pitched whine!

I just don't like to use gasket sealer...

I was down at the motorcycle shop the other day picking up something for the Norton....they were tearing down a Harley engine on which the owner used gasket sealer on the main cover....stuff got all down inside the engine & ruined it...guess he didn't understand "tiny amount.

I thought that paper gaskets do not use sealers.

THIN FILM of Hylomar or RTV, Vince. Used to be there was nothing to use ~but~ oil! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

One surface or both and can I get away with a thick paper I can make myself?

Will thickness be an issue.

I have a laser at work and we use it for patterns all the time. Drawing out a gasket & cutting it out is a piece of cake. Made new gaskets for my TD fuel pump with it.

Mine is an a small spraycan; cost a small fortune, but stuff works great.

Since you're pulling the axles out to replace the bearings, why not replace the thrust washers in the diff?

Sorry, like you need another job to do

Just remember when you use sealant: you might have to remove it someday...& if the next guy has to remove it, you may become a DPO (or some other explitive deleted)!

A bit is a small amount, Form a gasket BLUE will work just fine on your home made gasket. the gasket is about the thickness of typeing paper. Just color it with the sealer, not more.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif yeah, I know. In fact, the Hylomar spray goes on really thin, there's almost nothing to scrape/remove.

You should try it, really. It's great stuff.

I thought I only had to remove the hub extension (wire wheels).

I gotta pull axles?

Car is old but does not have that many miles on it.

Depends; are you replacing bearings or just seals? Seals are easy, outer bearings are a little more difficult.

When needed look at the book. Hehe. This is an easy and fast job.
