Is there any way of avoiding scratches on the windscreen cap?

Shy of not putting the top up...

Check out 3M Scotchcal; an "invisible" clear tape used on automobile front ends to stop stone chips. It has an adhesive that is released with water and alcohol, and is completely removeable. Available on a roll in bulk per foot.
Make a template, cut and apply from the center, squeegee the water out towards the edges with a hard squeegee.

Sure, never put your top up and you won't have to worry about it.

You're welcome. I bought precut kits of Scotchcal (Invisi-shield, ClearBra, X-pel) to protect the front end of all of our vehicles. It lasts well, can be waxed and best of all absolutely no rock chips. I plan to custom kit pieces for the TRs after I get them painted. The film is invisible at 10 feet and has a very slight texture very close-up. Expensive (pre-cut) and worth every penny. I think Griot's Garage sells it in small pieces.
