Well I thought all my wiring was correct until I got the engine started. My tach is not woring. Starts at like 8000 rpm.

I should have paid closer attention when I took it out.

Has four wires.

White
Black
Red
Green

I am sure that white and black are leads for the dash lights. Green goes to neg (-) coil but I figured red must be 12-v in. Is it possible that the red is (-) ground?
 
what wires need to be cut? I just moved this into my new car from my old. But my new car has a handmade harness.

red to 12-v
green to coil neg. Yellow from coil neg to XT700 elec ign, No matter where I switch the switch to still makes no change.
 
I thought it was a new tach. An Autometer Tach usually comes set to run with an 8 cyl. There are two wires looped out the back of the case, I think a brown and an orange. You cut one to run it on a six, and both to use it with a four.

I think its toast. That is disapointing. Between remove and re-install I must have done something to comprimise it's function. Just Does not return to zero. Stays near eight. pulls over to nowhere land when running but certainatally not functionable. Guess I have to bight the bullett.
 
I have a stock, tiny 1500 Midget tach and an adjustable shift light (from Summit...about $35).
I hardly use the tach anyway....I *live* off the shift light.
 
The shift light is on my xmas list. (If santa likes me.... sounds like the same one too..($35.95 from Summit) The bigger problem is the hole the absent tach leaves in that nice new dash I just Fabbed. I think the stock 1500 tack will fit, but Dunno what the last guy did to this ditributor. Im sure my pop has all the parts laying around to convert back to stock if all else fails. Jes hate expenses you thought were already covered.

(Than again what was I thinking.. racecars are never ending expenses!)
 
Scrath it All Tach works! Just as I was ready to bid on a similar tach on ebay. Turns out the pointer needle was just loose on the shaft. Popped the face and the needle fell off in my hand. So I zero'd the tach and pushed it back on with some Krazy glue. Reinstalled and presto. Might be off by 100 but very close if not perfect. So leaves me only with my carberator problems. Gonna go search some su info on jetting and such.
 
In the Elva I have an Autometer Monster tach hooked up to one of their lights with the shift point being settable via a knob on the tach. On two occasions the shift point has spontaneously moved about 500 rpm's higher than where I set it--rather disconcerting to say the least.
