Spitfire autocrossing spitfire in H Stock

Offline
Does anyone autocross their Spitfire? I might have the opportunity to autocross a stock 67 Spitfire. Are these cars competitive in H Stock? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Hmmm.. to be honest, probably not. The only way to have a chance is to get R-compound tires, which oddly enough are legal in stock class. You'll be up against 2.3l Focus', Mini Coopers (non S), and the like. The suspension setups are far superior to anything our old Triumphs have....

With the being said, one of the quickest cars at our local auto-x events was a nearly stock 83 VW rabbit. It had no interior, and racing tires, but an essentially stock motor; and he embarrassed almost everyone on the track. What I'm trying to say that car vs. car you'll probably lose, but if you're a good driver then I'd say you'd have a better than average chance. If you don't have that much experience, then practice, practice, practice!

I'd still get some R-compound tires, it makes it that much more fun.

It really depends on city to city. When I autocrossed in Houston, there was only one H-stock king running in an old Civic hatchback (the wagon-like one.) Once I brought my wife's cousin out, and he was driving an old Jetta in G stock (I believe) and he took home a trophy -- because nobody else raced in G-stock that day. (Of course, there were tons of SS, CS, DS etc...)

Plus, so much depends on the driver. I do agree, though, that a stock LBC will be killed by any modern car, assuming the driver has some skill. (Or Dan Gurney or Bob Tullius isn't behind the wheel of the LBC.)

Bottom line, though, is you race to have fun, not to win. (Easy for me to say -- I was class champion /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif)

I would jump on the opportunity. What have you got to lose? Remember this car should not have a synchro first gear, which will take away some of the fun. Years ago one of my old friends used to do well in a stock Alpine. Its all about knowing your car and practice, practice practice.
