Autocrossing a classic Mini problems

Hello; I have a "classic" Mini with 1275 Cooper S engine that I autocross in the summer months. I have found that it has trouble getting up to speed at slow corners when the revs are low and mashing the throttle. It makes a staccato like sound until I can get out of the corner and on to a straightaway. It has: 2 X 1-1/2 SU HS4 carburettors, 25D diz rebuilt by Jeff Schlemmer a few years ago. I am using 15w-50 synthetic dashpot oil. I did not build the engine but after recent head removal to replace valves and guides it looks like it has the BMC 731 camshaft. Valve timing is 2 degrees advanced.

What's odd is that at fast corners the car runs fine which leads me to believe wrong needle in the carbs. I have not had it dyno'd but do have a wide band sensor available to install and am thinking that is a step in the right direction.

Float levels fine, leaking not an issue and cleaned everything after winter hibernation. "New" SU solid state fuel pump AUF 214.

Yes considered that. It's got an older "remote" type gearbox and probably would have to double-clutch to go to 1st. I may waste too much time.
