Auto transport for club use?

It may be wishful thinking, but I'm interested in getting to the fall VTR/Triumphest along with a few other club members.

Time and distance precludes driving or trailering directly, so I'm just starting to research a group transport to share with club members.

Has anyone done something like this, and if so do you have any suggestions? I've not called any transport companies at this point, just trying to get a feel for possibilities. Would be looking for round trip Houston/San Luis Obispo roughly.

Great idea, Randy - I'll be interested to see how this turns out.

Train is another possibility... Probably cost-prohibitive, though.

Sounds like a good idea IF you can get the truck filled with just your cars. They usually don't transport until the truck is filled and the last thing you want is a late delivery or multiple stops along the way where your cars could be moved around. I'd also only go with a fully enclosed transporter. My son's Audi got to ride up top on a cross country trip and the car showed evidence of close encounters with some tree branches scraping down the car.

This is totally from memory, but here goes:

A few years ago for one of the charity reliability runs in Michigan or the midwest, there was talk of group transport through FedEx's car transport company (is that right?) for the participants. That was mentioned in an article in one of the car mags (Automobile?) by Jamie Kidman, who has a TR4A and a Dolemite Sprint. Maybe Blake Discher, VTR President and Detroit Triumphs member, would be able to advise you.

Clear as mud? I think getting people to go in with you would be a good idea, too.

I suspect the devil is in the details here. I've made one call to DAS who are a pretty big operation. Talked to one guy, seems potentially simple in that there is a pickup point in Houston, and a dropoff point in Gardenia. But the guy punted on giving me a rough quote for a group, just took my name and said someone would call. I'm waiting!

This isn't even a topic yet in my club, but I'd like to be armed with rough costs before I even bring it up. Not a bad thought to contact Blake, he may know if anything like that went on in the last VTR meet.
