Australian GP Drifting!

Watched some Aussie racing down under last night and was amazed by the racing they call drifting. They go to the extreme drifting on a road course type track with high horse power cars! The rear tires are smoking 75% of the time! I thought it was quite a test of skill! Really liked watching it! Anyone else see it? They usually only run two cars at a time. PJ

Not just in Australia....we have in the US too. In fact I've seen it at a number of race tracks here in the northeast when I was at various vintage races (they will often use a skid pad or open parking area to do this).

It seems to have great appeal to young folks and these events usually have a "festival" atmosphere with bikini contests or wet tee-shirt contests along with the type of loud music that I do not like. I heard that a drifting event at Summit Point (WV) last year got pretty out of hand with the "partying".

Still.....there is some skill involved and it's sort of like road racing is some respects (car control in turns).

Some of the show-off stuff does not appeal to me and is patently dangerous (such as hanging out of the car while drifting).

As near as I can tell, they take it pretty seriously down under and from what I saw there was no goofing off at any time, but they didn't show what goes on behind the scenes though. :highly_amused: PJ

I forget what channel it was on, I think a speed channel, but after the drifting was over, European motor cycle ice racing was on and boy is that a trip! Might have been in Sweden. These guys actually wore, what looked like, bullet proof upper clothing! The spikes on the tires look to be 3 inches long! Russia won first place over all and Sweden 2nd. PJ
