the first motion shaft synchromesh cone which is molybdenum coated is delaminating, with pieces falling into first motion caged bearing, destroying bearing. i have two questions, 1. can this be recoated and where ? , 2. can i remove coating and fit a bj7 bronze sunchro ring. has anyone tried this other than new shafts ?

Hello saltiga,

You will have to replace the gears as well if you want to install BJ7 syncro's.

To be honest I have never heard of anyone re-coating the syncro's as they usually just replace them.

I said that last piece in the hope that someone out there is just dying to contradict me and we'll end up with all kind of links to places that re-coat the syncro's.

I just saw that you're from OZ, have you talked to the people at The Healey Factory by any chance to see what they said (apart from change the gears and syncro's)?.

Best regards,

bundyrum.

Hi Bundyrum, years ago when the brass syncro's weren't available, I used the later MK3 steel style on earlier box. Worked great as I remember. As you say I don't know why one would go the other wat, cheers Genos2

Hello Bundyrum,
Bundaburg in Queensland is the home of bundy rum. A very nice place, not too far from the Whitsundays.
Now to gearboxes, yes I have contacted the Healey Factory and no, they do not have a replacement part. Denis Welch has the complete Sebring conversion.
I have taken the parts to a gearbox mechanic (manual gearbox only specialist) he has advised me that delamination of the syncro cone is very common with this type of syncro set up. Here I am in the hands of the experts.
The 1st motion shaft from Denis Welsh has the some treatment eg. molly coated cone.
If no one has tried to fit bronze cones to a healey bj8 box, then I shall give it a go by cylindricaly grindig off the molly, have a syncro ring cast then machine to allow for the removed molly. If this does not work then it will be to Denis Welsh for replacements.
Thanks and regards. Trevor9.
