Austin Gipsy

It does have a certain similarity. My Land Cruiser was a lot rustier, though.

I miss my old truck... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

That license plate means that it was first
registered near the Oregon border.Did you get
any history on it?

- Doug

It has the Austin 2.2 Liter engine "tuned for torque" as the sales information says. It is apparently the same engine used in the A70.

I will say that I cannot believe how tight and precise the transmission feels in this thing.

They did also offer a diesel version of the same displacement. I understand those to be a bit rarer.

I believe that this Gipsy came from the Oroville area. Its twin (the previous owner bought two) was only two serial numbers apart, but the license plates start with M. This was used primarily as a "farm truck" and apparently was used on most occasions to just push things around. I think that is why it has so much body damage. (I have my work cut out for me so to speak)

I didn't know that when they reissued plates that they started at the top of the state and worked down. I find that very interesting.

Yeah,if they're Black plates,you can get a rough
idea where it was in '63.Started with A in the North
end of the state,& went to Z in the Southern end.

not sure about that Cal plate info

my best buddys dad had a Mercury Comet with ARD for the plate and he was in LA area

Beaulieu

Comet was probably bought in the North,
& sold down South.
This only pertains to Black plates, before
1970.

Comet was owned by him in Los Angeles in 1962 with yellow plates , the black plates came and he got ARD , he worked at Arden Milk at the time....

I am interested in knowing about the plates. I had a 63 Ford Falcon originally from San Francisco. It had its original plates - CXA 184 - so northern CA.

I had a 68 Mustang originally from LA - WZP 599 - but that was of course years later in 68.

I have a second set of plates for the Gipsy (from her sister) two serial numbers later - but the plate starts with MUP.

Plates around here would have started with a "B".
My Dad bought a '60 Pontiac Wagon around Visalia,& it
was LKU 771.
With Black plates,it doesen't seem to matter which
year, but where in the state it was first registered -
- (or reregistered).

The late Harry Pellow AKA "The Maestro" wrote an excellent article on California plates. I don't know if his site is still up or not. BTW, he went out of his way to help me get Porsche 356 engine parts I couldn't find anywhere else. He is missed.

Have a nice day
Steve
