Austin Generator

Hello there,
I am trying to find out the specific details of the generators used in the old austin cars. I recently salvaged one from a old car and am trying to use it as a generator in a seperate device. Any way to tell this would be greatly appreciated. Im not sure what model car i took it from as it was pretty rusted out and i forgot to check. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif was in another town.

Hi Slap, look on the generator it will have a C something class number on it. For example the highest output generator has a "C or CP 42" designator . Knowing this designator will allow yours to be identified.--Fwiw--Keoke

thanks for the info there, i think mine is a refurbished or new model as it doesnt quite match the ones in the photos given here. This is compounded by the plate on it having all the details scratched off it. Ive uploaded some pics of it and was wondering if anyone could recognise it. I would be immensly grateful.

Don't know much, but does that look like an alternator? Never seen a generator that short.

Doesn't sound like a Lucas Generator. They don't have any plates on them for markings. They're stamped into the housing.

Slap's photo is indeed an alternator, not a generator. That should be pretty standard Lucas stuff, nothing really unique to an Austin. The very early Lucas alternators used an external control box. Shortly after that the more common and current design with the integrated controls came into use. I suspect that's what you have.

If you google the topic of "alternator conversion" and use additional keywords like "TR6" or "MG" you should come up with a wealth of articles on how this or that alternator can be adapted to various British cars with an explanation of what the various alternator wires connect to. Most of those links will have photographs showing the rear of the alternator to help you identify which pins to use.

On the same subject, anyone know of a reputable place that can rebuild an original Healy generator (not alternator)?

I would first try a local shop that repairs starters, alternators, and generators. There isn't much difference repairing a Lucas generator as other brands. As long as they can get the right brushes and bearings.

Don't know where you are in Virginia but if near DC Bruce at Healey Surgeons could do it and/or supply the parts to your local shop--generators are pretty much generators.

There's a wonderful electric motor/generator/starter shop near me--Wenger's Electric Motors in Loveville, MD. If you send it to them I guarantee that you'll get good and very reasonable work.

This is actually for a customer. We're in Richmond. As of two days ago, things may have changed. We may be putting an alternator on now.
