I have an Austin A30 803cc and I recently completly rebuilt the engine. I have done about 300 miles with no problems but there has now developed a sqeaky whistling sound from the engine. I disconnected the fan belt and the noise is still there so that lets out the dynamo and the water pump I guess. To hear the noise best you need to be in front of the radiator grille and it sounds as if it is directly behind.
Any ideas?

Tighten the manifold nuts and the carb mounting nuts. A tiny vacuum leak can make a very strange noise.

Have now tried that,Alan, and no change.
However, listening with a piece of pipe seems to indicate that it is coming from the timing chain cover.

Have removed timing cover and discovered crankshaft nut was not very tight!!
Nothing special found so replaced and tightened well + loctite and the noise is still there.
Wonder if ther is a broken piston ring or if the piston has picked up. Will try some more tomorrow. Any ideas. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

No, the chain is tight.
I have now discovered that no. 2 cylinder is down on compression. I put some oil in the bore and this brought it back up again.
I think a ring may have broken?
