I did not rebuild the unit which sat on my shelf for 25 years (gambling it would be fine, worked then,)
After fitting to the tranny and installing, it failed to engauge , checked the solenoid and the adjustment and still nothing
I figure the pistons may be frozen up with dried oil or ? . any ideas or suggestions short of removing it again and rebuilding ?

You could fit a pressure gauge to the unit and test the pump output (procedure in the manuals).

There're quite a number of reasons that come to mind, like the gearbox I took apart about a year ago, and they neglected to fit the cam that operates the pressure pump...

Have you driven it or put it on jack stands and run it in 4th gear for awhile and then pushed the lever on the right side to engage OD (with tunnel cover off). If it activates, then you work on all the electrical issues, like solenoid, throttle switch etc. You can remove side panel and see if oil is in the accumulator or if it is clogged with sludge. There is a long thread on this recently. Check it out.

The best diagnostic tool for the OD unit is as Randy says, a pressure gage. I fabricated one using a spare operating valve hex cap. I drilled a hole in it and welded a steel nipple on that I could attach a pressure gage to. You run the car with the OD engaged, on jack stands (or actually on the road if you can tolerate being so close to the driveshaft)and see if you have oil pressure. I'm not too far from you and I'd be willing to lend you mine if you want. Saves a lot of time and head scratching. If you have no, or low pump output pressure that is the first problem to address. If you have proper output pressure then either the operating valve is clogged , something in the OD clutch mechanism is frozen, or your accumulator o rings are so far gone nothing holds pressure.

THANKS A LOTT GUYS
i took your hint and followed the oil pressure. took out the the plug from the side cleaned up the valve, wasn't dirty, and was wet. turned the wheels and got a pulse of oil indicating the pump was working. could not check the pressure though. then found the proper drill bit reset the adjustment on solenoid.
took the precaution while having it up in the air and changed out the 4.1 to the 3.5 in case it doesen't work. will test out all the minor adjustments in the morning.

what are your thoughts around driving for the season and the chance of it freeing up by its self
i alway liked cars that fixed themselfs

again thanks for all the input

OD FREE!! YEA
took the car out this afternoon after the minor adjustments were made(don't think the adjustment was my issue though) just 30 year stuck

it engaged(not as quick as i like) but still needs some fine tuning
gonna check and drain oil now it now, in case there was any crap that shows up after freeing up
reset throttle switch, and see if it can make to engage a bit quicker

till next time guys
thanks

A Healey that fixes itself - very rare. Mostly, they do that to mess with your mind.
