OK, I just discovered that the assembly order is not

Shroud
Rad
Fan (can't get the fan in)

is it

Shroud
Fan
Rad

or

Fan
Rad into Shroud
Shroud/Fan Unit
 
My personal preference was fan, shroud, rad. There is about .001mm of clearance between the fan and the radiator. Ugu.

I go rid of the fan and mounted a pusher electric fan. The front of the engine is much easier to work with now!
