Asbestos heat shielding.

Does one clean and replace the original heat shielding or re-manufacture it from non asbestos cementitious hardboard? Is there any benefit in keeping the old, insulation wise, over renewing it with the hardboard? How best to clean the old? Should I be concerned at all?

I wouldn't clean or even touch asbestos with out mask and gloves. Probably wouldn't clean it any way. If you need to, there are replacement boards available at Home Depot that will work fine. Just be cautious using the old ones as patterns. It is interesting to me that we need to be cautious now when we used to handle brake shoes all the time in my youth. Don't even get me started on what we did with mercury.

I bought my Insulation stuff from BCS(NFI), and unlike the Hardie material presently being sold at the home improvement centers in the US, their supplier is in the UK and uses a product called "Master Board" which is a brighter white cement board. Don't forget the rivets for the carb heat shield, etc.

Does one clean: original heat shields----Never!!!!!

Replace the original heat shielding:----Highly recommended. However,, be very careful when removing it.

Re-manufacture it from non asbestos:---- Good solution

cement it continuous:---No this defeats its purpose.

Is there any benefit in keeping the old, insulation wise,:--NO!!!

Renewing it with the hardboard? :---- Excellent alternative ,is also economical and readily available at hardware stores.

Should I be concerned at all?:--

---OH!!! my goodness yes it is a potential caner generator.

Does anyone have the patterns for the heat shields?

And DON'T toss it in the trash. It is hazardous waste and you should call the trash pick-up people so find out how to dispose of it. You could be in big trouble otherwise. They may actually charge a hazardous waste fee. So, have I scared you? You may want to leave it be. I did.

SOLUTION of the problem <span style="font-weight: bold">can</span> be:
IF ASBESTOS<span style="font-weight: bold"> is in acceptable condition</span>
1)Paint it with synthetic paint (H. TEMPERATURE type)
2)Then cover perfectly with aluminium sheet (minimum 2)
with synthetic adhesive as BOSTIK
this system avoid the dispersion of powder of ASBESTOS
with the the application of the barrier of paint and aluminium

Paint must be used to avoid any possible dispersion due
to accidental fracture of the two sheets of aluminium

The characteristically of insulation of the ASBESTOS
are upgraded with the addition of reflective sheets of aluminium

no dispersion no trouble no hazardous waste addition
Integrity of the aluminium sheets <span style="font-weight: bold">MUST</span> be controlled
MINIMUM every year
cheers

Thanx for the input. I thought I would be out of the woods with just a little cleanup of the shields. Nope, guess again. :wall: Oh well, I will take your advice and play it safe.. The old shielding would look rather tired against the new ivory paint anyhow.
