Arm rest attachment

My late model BJ8 came with the wrong console and armrest for the model. So I had to shorten the console and buy a relplcement armrest. It appears that the front of the armrest sort of tucks into the console. The rear of the armrest has two tabs that seem to want to attach to the drive shaft tunnel, although there are no screw holes at present. This doesn't seem like a very secure mounting system. Is there more to it? And how do the rear tabs mount after carpet is installed? Thanks. I'm 90% done, with just about 95% to go.

Hi Cutlass, I drive a BJ8, Ph. 2 and my armrest is mounted exactly the way you describe. The screws in my car go through the armrest, carpet into the drive shaft tunnel. As far as I recall the front is held by a screw below the ashtray.

If your BJ8 is constructed like mine, you need not screw the armrest into the tunnel, leave the screws off. The armrest is squeezed in tightly and it won't go anywhere. It is attached at the console end. You can snip off the tabs if they're visible or they bother you. If the fit isn't tight, then I suppose you'll have no choice but to screw it down.

Thanks, Randy and Fortius. I'm just now able to start the upholstery, so won't know about the tightness of the fit until all is done. It did seem a bit odd to have those two tabs, with visible screws, holding the rest down. I looked at another BJ8 the other day, and the armrest was quite secure, with no visible screws. Could it be that there is a flap cut in the tunnel carpet which conceals the tabs?
