I have a BN6
any suggestions on a good way to afix the arm rest (not the saddle type) to the carpeted surface of the trans tunnel?. Ideally this will not involve contact cement, hot-melt glue, or removing the carpet from the car. not possible? how about velcro? just curious, but how was this done at the factory? thanks.

With the constraints you have laid down all I can think of is "Double Sided Thermal Sticky Tape". This type tape is used to attach that green grass looking carpet to steps and patios. Velcro will require gluing--Keoke-?

Well then stitching Velcro in place would seem to be be the most flexible method.
 
I was being somewhat facetious...I recognize that I will ultimately need to attach the arm rest mechanically (stitches) or with adhesive. Just didn't know my options or how others accomplished this. Thanks

I had the same concern. I decided to make a console out of some rolled aluminum. The base is [ 2"] tall at the top of the tunnel and contoured down the sides, and is secured to the tunnel with two screws. I attached the upholstered arm rest to a hinged top. Works great for holding sun glasses, cell phone, etc, with an added bonus - it just right height for my elbow to rest on comfortably. Can send some picture if you would like.

Nevets, I have a BN7 and here's what I did. First, the carpet over the tranny tunnel comes out quite easily. I then added heat insulation I purchased on the under side. Then I temporarily glued (3M spray type) exactly where I wanted the armrest to fit onto the carpet. I then took the whole thing to a shoe repair shop. yes, a shoe repair shop. The guy loved to work on something other than shoes for a change of pace and only charged me $10 to sew the armrest onto the carpet. I used a shoe repair shop because the armrest, carpet, and insulation all added up to quite a thickness. It looks very professional and very factory. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I will first investigate how "removable" the tunnel carpet is. I'm a litttle concerned about the ashtray. If it is possible to remove without causing any damage to anything, then I think sewing it on (by a shoemaker or similar craftsperson) a good way to go.

Apology for delay in responding for pictures of my armrest, but I forgot my son boroughed my digital camera to take to Prauge, then when I get it back the battery is dead. I'm not sure how to add the pictures to this reply, but I'll give it a try.
