Whilst re-assembling my transmission I made a stupid mistake and chipped two teeth on first gear.

Am I doomed????

It'll sing and "sizzle", eventually it will damage the laygear too. Chris is right. Replace it.

Morris, ask yourself this. If you noticed a bad gear when you opened the gearbox up, would you replace it?
Of course you would.
Sometimes it just hurts worse when we have to pay for our mistakes.

And just what can I tell in a smooth box when I open the inspection plate or wiggle the shafts?

Hay, sorry. Never had to be a transmission guy. If I could I would take it to a transmission shop but you know how that is. Who ever saw one of these.

About all you can tell Jack, is if all the gears look to be intact, and there are no obvious loose parts floating around, no bent forks, etc. To check for much more, you'll have to tear it down, as many of the wear points are hidden. The condition of the synchro cones, and the layshaft, for example.

Shoot I wouldn't know a worn lay shaft if I had one on my desk, sigh.

Condition of the synchro cones is not an issue, you can't get them in any case.

Trust me, you'd know a worn layshaft when you saw one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
