APT cam - Plug- rear

Country flag
Offline
It comes to my attention that the apt(vp11 i think) cam i have for an 18v rebuild needs a plug installed in the rear. Instructions i have state that the cam has been gun drilled to provide better oil flow.

can any one tell my the type and size of plug required? the cam did not come with one.

I build tons fo MG B series motors for a living and pretty much use APT cams in every one of them, and have no idea what you are talking about. Now if this were a MGA or early 3 main 1800, then you would have mechanical tach drive on the rear of the cam, and yes if you plan on using the mechaincal tach, you would need to install the mech. tach drive gear on the rear of the cam, along with the keyway and unless you are machinist or good with press and jigs, leave it to the machine shop to do that, or either have David at APT install a new gear on the camshaft. If this is later 5 main MGB, they didn't use the mech. tack drive the cam blanks are made to take them, if you do ue it, but on the 5 main engine, you would put nothing there, because those tachs are electronicly driven.

Thanks for the reply Hap,

This link- https://dl.dropbox.com/u/19278540/pdf%20files/BseriesCamSpecSheet.pdf
in paragraph 4 it states;

"These cams are gun drilled for extra lubrication to the oil
pump drive gear. It is the engine builders responsibility
to make sure these drillings are clean and the plug fitted"

Now the cam i have VP11 did not come with a plug to install in the rear of the cam. My question is what size is the plug i need to install?

If theirs a question about an APT product why not contact David Anton since he made the camshaft in question. Wouldn’t you agree he would have all the answers to your questions? Here’s his toll free phone number 800.278.3278 Cheers

Yep, I would call Dave, but I'm pretty certain, the above only applies to the APT A Series billet cams, which has oiling holes on the cam lobes, the APT B Series billet camshaft does not have this feature, meaning nothing to plug, I'm buildng a MGB motor right now with tht same APT VP11 billet cam, and use these cams several times a year, in my customer rebuilds.

Just afollow up on this, sure enough APT has the gun drilled warning on the B seires cam card. I'm doing a MGB engine with a VP11 billet right now, this gun drilled warning does not apply to the B series billet cam, only his billet A series cams, they can do that with the A series as far as gun drilling cam and have oil feeds to the cam lobes, because the A series engine drives the oil pump off the rear of the cam, but this is not the case in a B series engine. I've got a new VP11 billet cam here right now, and it is simply center drilled front and rear for mounting the cam on the grinder, no plugs. Now don't take my word for it, I wouldn't take some guy off the internet word either, call David, but he will confirm this, in short for this to be on the B series cam sheet is a typo, heck I never even noticed and I use APT B series billet cams probably 6-7 times a year in inhouse rebuilds, time for ole buddy Dave to clean up the cam sheet, but atleast they do give real timing specs to work with, I'm a firm believer in the quailty of their cams and lifters.

You have their CF-04 lifters as well, right?

Just to wind this up. there is no gun drilling in the cam i have (vp11). The rear is tapped for something - but it is a blind hole. should be good to go.

Yep thats there for machining/grinding purposes. I used 2 APT cams in MGB engine rebuilds since this thread started :smile:
