Anybody here running 87mm pistons+cylinders

Just wondering if anybody here is running 87mm pistons+cylinders? I had my motor rebuilt and went for the 87mm set up and have yet to drive it. Do you notice a difference over the stock engine and is anything special needed for the stock SU carbs?

Thanks

I hope you do. I put them in, have a mild street cam, ported and relieved head and a couple of other things, hope to see a big increase in performance. Course I need to get it to start first! I suspect that the carbs need to be set up for the engins, just my guess. Somebody out there will have the answer. I will be interested to hear what they have to say, I'm getting close to punching the button on mine.

Good Luck, Tinkerman

Lesse, was that 1975 when we put in the first set of 87mm liners? Or 74? Anyway, they were available at JC Whitney then, cheaper than anywhere else.

Just the 87mm liners will make a noticeable difference. Not huge, but definite. Seems to work fine with stock carbs (though there might be another bhp or two to be picked up by reworking them).

Thats great to hear... so I will set the carbs up to the stock factory settings.

Tinkerman, sounds like you have a nice engine set up.... I cheaped out and stuck with the stock cam for now. What do you mean by relieved head? I look forward to your feed back once you get it running.

Yes.

I suspect there are few TR drivers who will even remember what the 83mm kit felt like. Or, indeed, what it meant to want to stay under two liters.

I just put the 87s in last fall. I really do notice the difference. Like TR3 Driver says, not huge, but it is faster.

Well, maybe at least vaguely. Hasn't been more than 15 years ago that I was driving a stock 1991 to work every day. 3 of the pistons might even have been factory originals.

That engine came from a car that was literally found in a cornfield. Body was a total rust bucket, more Bondo than steel, but I don't think the driveline had many miles on it. Bought it for the OD, but that low port 1991 ran better than my clapped-out high port 2138, so I dropped it into my 3A at the same time as the gearbox. That short block is still in the (now wrecked) car, but I dropped in a (used) set of 87s after breaking one of the 83s.
