MGB any tall mgb owners

hello everybody, i have a serious question for everyone. How many tall mgb owners are there besides me? I'm 6'3'', love my 76 mgb for the leg room, but i have a problem with the rear view mirror. For a tall driver, it is right in the driver's line of view. Anything from center to right side of windscreen is obscured by the large mirror. i've tried the older mirror that clamps to the center support, but it doesn't have the night time feature. so, for the present, i do what i've always done, slump when turning or looking right. Sound silly? If the mirror could be raised just 2", it would be an improvement. Any suggestions? I know your probably visualizing the "russian bear on a circus bike", but it's not that bad. thanks...
 
I'm not 6'3", but I have my own bones to pick with the positioning of the rear view mirror on my '76 B too. I've had whole SUV's disappear behind it only to pop out and suprise me while making left and turns. The Night/Day toggle is great to have, so I'm interested in hearing what other people may have come up with in this regards.

I haven't looked too hard, but have you thought about a dash mounted mirror similar to what the 'A uses? I think that if there's a way to mount a day/night toggle mirror as close to the dash as possible that might be ideal.
 
With the early mount, just slide it lower. Puts it out of your line of sight. That said, a rear view mirror always works best at eye level. So I guess it's a tradeoff.

I haven't noticed that problem either and I'm 6'-4" too. The biggest problem is long drives and cramping in the right leg.
 
hmmm... maybe I'm too short? i'm only 5'10", and the mirror is in my line of view unless I slouch a bit...
 
I am 6'3" and I have a 76 and 80 MGB and I know what your talking about.
I have the added problem of my wife is 5'5" and likes the mirror the way it is.
I rebuilt the seats and supports in the 80 and changed the seat height less than an inch and she squalled until I put it back to its original height.
I will be restoring the 76 (it was a runner till the engine croaked than is was a parts car and now it's a project again)and will adjust the seat and mirror so I can drive it and she can have the 80. Besides I never liked pushing the turn signal to blast the horn anyway.
I still have a problem with the side mirror being a little too far back for my taste so I will readjust that when I do the others.
 
it really is an issue, isn't it? i'm interested to hear about the seat modifications, but that does seem to be a bit more than, say, modifying the mirror. i was hoping someone would have found an easy fix, but, owning an mg, nothing is easy. perhaps that's the fun of it.
 
eh, all of this talk of line of sight and vision has gotten to pay even more attention to what I can and can't see through my windshield. I think the problem I had with SUVs disappearing being the rearview was when I had non-stock seats in the car and I sat probably 2 inches higher. Last night while driving home I noticed that all 3 Stop lights that Glendale likes putting at intersections were missing behind my windshield frame (left and top center stop light) and the rearview mirror (far right stop light). That's a rare occurrance though. Most of the time I can look up (with the top down) and see the light fine. However, in the winter time I have to rely on the far right light, or slouch if they're all obscured.
 
that may be a solution. my driver's seat wouldn't recline. But, while the b is in the bidy shop(i'm doing a chrome bumper conversion), i was able to fix the seat, which may help.
 
Hello, I'm only 6' but have noticed some seeing problems, I wonder if some sort of bracket could be fitted to the two bolts that hold the center rod behind the winshield could be fabricated? What was the line from the movie The Gumball Ralley after the guy ripped the rear view mirror off of the car? "What's behind me isn't important" just a thought, Good luck, Mack
 
good question mack. i've wondered if the mirror could be raised by cutting and welding it. i have a friend who owns a machine shop, i guess i'll give it a try.
 
Your quote is from the hired Italian driver in that movie. He states "What is behind me, it does not matter" and rips the rear view mirror off the car with a continential flair.
Love that movie but can't stand Italian cars.
I'm curious as to the outcome of the mirror experiment and will look forward to a post.
I'm trying to find the specs for when I modified the original seat but I moved 2 years ago and the new place doesn't have a garage and everything is stored away.
It was a seat frame mod prompted by the condition of the frame (PO had left the top down in the rain a lot or had a serious bladder retention problem) and I modded the frame and seat webbing to compensate for
a bigger height and weight.
I'm also working 2 jobs right now and haven't had time to think but I will try to gather up some of the info I have and make a post or two.
 
I work with a guy that is 6'8" and he said he had an MGB when he was 20 years old. I wouldn't think that he has grown taller between 20 to 52 years of age, but who knows. When he told me that I envisioned him looking at traffic over the windscreen. Anyway, it was a cool story - he said he ordered it new and saw it come off the truck at the local MG dealer lot. For some reason he only had it one year. Maybe because he had so many bugs on his forehead.
