My boss has a new project on his hands. He picke dup a 1970 Karman Ghia and wants to make it electric. He showed me somthing today and I was not sure of the answer. The mian shaft, sticking out of the trans wiggles back and forth. Is this common in a trans? We are at work so I cannot check my extra ones which I have at home. Seems to me that it should be a rigid thing but not sure on the VDubs.

the shaft you can see is only 6-8 inches long,
it connects to the main shaft with a threaded pin and a couple of circlips and a coupler,

so its normal for it to move,
it will move less with a new seal

what motor is he going to use, and where is he going to hide the batteries ?

Oh, no.......................

Our Ghia is scheduled for the bodyshop over the winter - a "belly pan-off" restoration...the 2nd we've done to it since we bought & restored it in 1986.

Gee..I didn't think any British car fans other than myself owned a Ghia. I have a '71 ragtop. Wished I didn't, I could use the space in the garage.

We've a '71 coupe with a Webastos sunroof....daughter drove it to high school & first couple of years of college....been sitting since 1994.

He still undecided on a motor. The one he wants has 6 month lead time so he's mulling it over. He is certain that he will use a clutch though. Batteries he figures will fit four in the back by the motor 2-4 at the back seat and another 2-4 in a false gas tank under the hood. He's only had it a wek but has already formed the https://www.lieaa.org/ of which I am a card carrying member...hey he's the boss and I need to listen to im right? Don't worry, all the MG's are staying gas. I don't have the cash to make an electric car but do hope by being a member to understand more about electrics.

Excellent. I looked at doing an EV conversion before, but I realised it was going to run me the better part of $10K for anything that was higher quality than total redneck (not including the car). I still havent givin up the idea, just put it on hold. Maybe I could find one already done. or good EV parts in a bad car that I could use in a car of my own.
My new shop of employ sees several "veggie cars" and I'm Toyota Hybrid certified, but I haven't worked on an EV yet.
I love alternative cars.
If I was closer I'd join your club. Best of luck making a go of it.
Now I fully expect to hear that he's named the car "Karman-Electra"

at one time Bradley was making some EV cars
back when Carter passed a dollar for dollar tax credit ,
lots of money was blown on stupid projects with that one for one deal

you might google Bradley GT and see what comes up

google bradley GT electric and you will find a bunch of info.....

what you will not find is that at their bankruptcy auction in Fountin Valley Callifornia , right next to the 405 freeway ,

there were many converted chassis that had box sections built for the batteries ,
they used starter motors for jet aircraft , I believe GE , just bolted up to the VW gearbox,

there were a few with incomplete bodies , but more chassis than bodies ,
plus a bunch of electric motors over in the corner,

at the time no one really cared so they went cheap,
every once in a while someone will show up with an electric motor kit for sale at the car swap meet,

thats all I remember right now, it was over 25 years ago.....
