Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

"Take it back...

Lift us up
Take us high,

Let us sail above th' foam..."

Re: Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

Doc....that question is ALMOST treasonous!

It was originally know as the Royal Yacht Squadron's 100 Guinea Cup. The inaugural event was held August 22, 1851 and started at 10:00am. It ended 10 hours and 37 minutes later. As a result of the finish, it has been known as the America's Cup ever since.....

Re: Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

There's a museum in Newport, R.I., the Museum of Yachting, that has a section dedicated to te America's cup. They even have some of the older wooden boats in the water. Curator is a retired Navy admiral. A few years ago, during their closed off-season, my daughter bought me a personal tour of the museum and repair shops led by the curator himself. He, I, and the employees were the only people in the place - I spent the entire day wandering around after he gave me the big tour. Even got to climb aboard some of the old wooden yachts.

If you're ever in Newport, you've gotta go through the museum. In the summer, the old wooden boats are actually in the water.

If LBC's could float, you call them a boat. It is all about fun and ego. Some fun things just cost more then others...

From a former 36' wooden boat owner that burned a gallon a mile, got hauled out each year, and repainted every two.

sooo true, Ray.

What sailing has become at the level those things are, it is sheer elegance in my opinion.

Why go around bouys when you can go around the world. What was the Whitbread is now the Volvo Ocean Race.

I grew up sailing the Madison WI lakes. Racing C & E Scows. Loads of fun. Can't afford both sailing and LBCs/racing. So the boat will wait till retirement.

What kind, Ray? We've owned a coule of larger wooden boats: a 28' Chris and a 33' Trojan plus an 18' wooden runabout. I remember, on the Trojan, if I was standing on the fly & shoved both throttles to their stop, I could see a huge hole in the water behind the swim platform & could watch the gas guage needles moving downward

Re: Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

Tony,

It was a custom made cabin cruiser/sport fisher built out of 3/4 inch mahogany planking and powered by twin Chrysler Marine 354's with integral hydraulic actuated transmission. Each engine had twin four barrel carbs, and when punched from dead stop, the same hole appeared astern. Her top speed was around 25 knots. My boat did not have a gas gauge, just a long measuring stick you would poke into the 500 gallon gas tank from time to time.

I once let a friend bring her into the slip. This guy thought he was a hot shot skipper. So he comes in a little to fast and slams the engines into reverse and hits the throttles, thinking he would make a cool hot shot stop. What he did not know, is the old hydraulic shifter took a bit of time to engage, which they did, but only after he put about 5 feet of the boat onto the dock which was amazing given her 2.5 foot draft.

I remember rebuilding these puppies.

Re: Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

My big Trojan had a pair of Ford 427 side oilers, I think they were side oilers because people were always wanting to buy my engines....each of them had a single huge 4-barrel on top......my runabout had a Chrysler 318 mounted amidship.

Re: Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

Haven't seen to many"cup" boats with a pair of 427 side oilers.

True....but I did own a Hunter 25 once. All it had was a little outboard hanging off the transom. Does that count?

Re: Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

When I was a youngster my family had two wodden boats. one a 30 footer and the other a 48 footer. Both sail, oh boy them were the days. What a place to take your girl friend on a week end. Errrr, wife to be.

Re: Any here know what the "America's Cup" is?

Living in RI, I'm in Newport a lot. My wife loves to sail and owned several boats. I hate it if I can't hit the key and go where I want and when I want, so sailing never appealed to me. I did tell her that I would consider a power boat someday when I win the lottery. So far, so good, I not a millionaire, but I don't have to have a hobby that I don't really want.

If I can't do it in a car or in a golf cart, I see no reason to be involved.

Oh, if anyone is ever visiting Newport, let me know. I'd be happy to meet you there.
