There is a wonderful series of movies they show at the Columbia Maritime Museum in Astoria (Oregon). They have ship (44?) preserved in a near upright position inside and many wonderful exhibits. Can't remember the name of it, but there is a famous CG ship outside on display.
The CG one I thought was quite unique was the enclosed one where you have to strap your self to the seat. It can roll completely over then right itself and keep going. Pretty good size boat, if I remember correctly. I forgot how many in the crew. PJ
Boink, that is an old 44 in the window. Crew of 3 to 5 would take it out in any weather when required. Ours was powered by twin V6-53 engines and was comfortable as long as it was nice out.
I see there is the Columbia Lightship outside along with a monster buoy. It would have been anchored outside the bar at all times unless a relief lightship was sent out.
I see. Amazing stuff. I've sailed in the north Pacific, but was never out there in the wilds like one sees near the Columbia bar (the "graveyard of the pacific").
Columbia, huh. I've got a self built 8' dinghy w/a 1.5hp Johnson that would love to be put to the test but certainly the captain would wear a bike helmet just to be safe.
