Since my last two daily drivers and my Midget are stick, the fiancee's Subaru has a perplexing question to answer.
She's been having some slow shifting and some rough upshifts, so following the usual recommendation I changed the fluid out a couple of times. I got some visible particles (not metal) out each time, and now it's shifting much better. It was overdue anyway, since it was supposed to happen at 30,000, but the dealer apparently left that out of their 30,000 mile service and now it has 47,000 miles.
The filter apparently never needs to be changed. I figured it was buried inside the transmission, but it's just a spin-on filter on the outside. I plan to put a cooler in since it looks like the old fluid got a little cooked, and we tow a camper. I was going to change the fluid one more time too, since it holds 10 quarts but you can only get about 3.5 quarts out of the pan.
Is there any compelling reason not to change the filter? Maybe Subaru has great faith in it, and maybe there's a screen inside that catches the larger particles I was seeing , but since auto trannys are known for making clutch debris, it sure seems like there wouldn't be any harm in changing the filter, even if the dealer insists it doesn't need to be changed. I just figured when I change the fluid once more and put the cooler in, that would be a good time to do it.
